HOW DO YOU DEAF? By Kerry Tidman is the first book in the Thriving with Hearing Loss series published by Avid Language, written especially for teens and young adults navigating the world with hearing loss.
This project is deeply personal. In the words of author, Kerry Tidman, “It’s the book I wish I had growing up — when I felt alone, unheard, or like I had to explain myself just to exist in certain spaces. Now, I'm turning lived experience into something that can meet young people where they are — and remind them that they are not broken, too much, or behind.”
Being deaf is just one part of who you are.
But... How do you deaf?
That’s completely up to you.
This isn’t another textbook telling you how to “fix” yourself.
This is real talk.
Stories that make you nod and think, “That’s me.”
Reflection prompts to help you figure out your identity, your mindset, and your power.
Because you don’t need anyone’s permission to own your deafness — or your life.
"An insightful, supportive and self-reflective read for teens, adults, parents and professionals..."
Being deaf is about more than hearing loss. It's about how you see yourself, how you navigate the world, and how you choose to show up every single day.
HOW DO YOU DEAF? will help you explore your identity, build confidence, and find your own voice - in your own way.
For there's no right way to be deaf.
There's just your way.

This isn’t just about deaf awareness.
It’s about helping students realise:
You’re not too much… you’re carrying too much

Hear Me is my signature talk and interactive workshop—created to move beyond surface-level understanding and into real, lasting change.
Because awareness alone doesn’t shift culture.
Self-awareness does.
As a Deaf woman living between the Deaf and hearing worlds, I’ve experienced firsthand what it feels like to not fully belong.
The assumptions.
The microaggressions.
The unconscious bias—even when people mean well.
Hear Me was created to change that.
Not through statistics or checklists…
but through honest storytelling, reflection, and human connection.
This workshop goes deeper than traditional diversity or deaf awareness sessions.
Participants don’t just learn about difference—
they begin to understand their relationship to it.
Through guided reflection and real-life insight, participants will:
Participants don’t leave thinking “I didn’t know that”
They leave thinking “I see this differently now.”
Sessions can be delivered:
Perfect for:
Participants leave feeling:
Because real belonging starts when people feel heard.
If you’re ready to go beyond awareness and create real cultural shift, I’d love to bring Hear Me to your organisation.
